It's a moderately challenging full-day hike over uneven ground, riverbeds and gradual climbs, usually several hours of walking in total. You don't need technical skills, but a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear help.

We recommend one. The route into the canyons isn't well marked and the terrain can be confusing, so a local guide keeps you on track and adds safety, especially as there's no phone signal in parts.

The trailhead is along the Boom Gorge east of Bishkek, roughly a couple of hours' drive, followed by the walk in. That's why it's a full-day trip rather than a quick outing.

Late spring to early autumn is best. Midsummer can be very hot in the exposed canyons, so an earlier start helps, and the riverbed section can be difficult after heavy rain, so we watch the weather.
