You start at a fifteenth-century stone caravanserai in a side gorge off the Torugart road and ride up to 4,025 m — the highest pass of any of these rides — then drop to Chatyr-Köl, a shallow, enormous lake sitting at 3,500 m against the Chinese frontier. It is the most dramatic short horse trek in Kyrgyzstan and among the least visited, because the permit puts people off. Do not let it. Arrange the paperwork through CBT Naryn a fortnight ahead and the rest is straightforward. Be honest about the riding. This is harder going than the Song-Köl routes: you'll want some basic saddle experience, and the days are genuinely uncomfortable, the soreness whole-body. It is not the place to gallop beyond your experience — that has caused injury here, so take the guide's instruction seriously. If you would rather walk, the pass is about four hours each way on foot, two along the valley and then a steep climb. Practicalities: no phone signal, no wi-fi, no shops and no restaurants at Tash Rabat. Temperatures drop below freezing even in summer and the yurts are heated with coal stoves. Do not drink the river water — there is livestock throughout the valley. The permit is checked as an original paper document; photocopies and screenshots are refused.
