This is an expedition rather than a trek, and the operator says so. Eight riding days at five to eight hours apiece, 195 km, 5,190 m of cumulative climbing, a high point of 3,935 m and the Archaly pass at 3,800 m. Five of the nine nights are in expedition tents rather than yurts, so this is a camping trip in high, empty country, not a yurt-to-yurt ride. Basic riding skill is required and the operator describes the trip as physically and mentally demanding. What you get for that is the only genuine traverse of the Kel-Suu region we found: it comes in from Bosogo and Kol-Tor, works east through the Balyksuu valley and the Kok-Kiya canyons to the lake, then continues south into the Ak-Say valley and out over the Bogoshtu pass to Birinchi May — rather than driving in and back out the same road, which is what every other Kel-Suu trip does. Day six is a rest day at the lake. The July-to-August window is not marketing caution; it is when the passes are reliably open, and there is little flexibility around it. The border permit is arranged within the package. No price is published — the operator quotes by group size and season — and the exclusions are not itemised, so establish in writing what meals, equipment and transport are covered before you pay a deposit.
