This is an expedition rather than a trek. Eight riding days at five to eight hours apiece, 195 km, 5,190 m of cumulative climbing, a high point of 3,935 m and the Archaly pass at 3,800 m. Five of the nine nights are in expedition tents rather than yurts, so this is a camping trip in high, empty country, not a yurt-to-yurt ride. Basic riding skill is required and the trip is physically and mentally demanding. What you get for that is the only genuine traverse of the Kel-Suu region: it comes in from Bosogo and Kol-Tor, works east through the Balyksuu valley and the Kok-Kiya canyons to the lake, then continues south into the Ak-Say valley and out over the Bogoshtu pass to Birinchi May — rather than driving in and back out the same road, which is what every other Kel-Suu trip does. Day six is a rest day at the lake. The July-to-August window isn't arbitrary; it's when the passes are reliably open, and there's little flexibility around it.
