Horse Trekking in Kyrgyzstan

Travel the way Kyrgyz herders always have: on horseback across high jailoo pastures to lakes like Song-Köl, staying in yurts along the way.

Horses are woven into everyday life in Kyrgyzstan, and a horse trek is one of the most authentic ways to see the country. You ride between summer pastures where families graze their flocks, camp or overnight in yurts, and reach places that are hard to get to on foot or by road.

The most popular ride heads up to Song-Köl, a wide alpine lake ringed by grassland at around 3,000 metres. Trips usually take two or three days, climbing from a valley base up onto the plateau, with a night in a herder's yurt and simple, hearty meals. Shorter half-day and full-day rides are possible near Karakol, Jyrgalan and other valleys if you just want a taste.

Good to know before you ride:

  • No experience needed for short rides; for multi-day treks a little confidence in the saddle helps, and guides match horses to your ability.
  • Season: the jailoo camps operate roughly from June to September; nights are cold at altitude even in summer, so bring warm layers.
  • Comfort: Kyrgyz saddles are basic, so padded trousers or a saddle cover make longer days easier.

We arrange guided horse treks with a local horseman, yurt-stay nights and meals included. Tell us your riding experience and how many days you have, and we'll suggest a route to match.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need riding experience?

Not for short introductory rides, where guides lead you at a walk. For multi-day treks to Song-Köl, some basic confidence in the saddle helps, but guides choose calm horses and keep the pace manageable for beginners.

How long is the ride to Song-Köl?

Most Song-Köl horse treks take two to three days, with a night or two in yurts on the plateau. Shorter and longer versions exist depending on your start point and how much time you have.

Where do I sleep on a horse trek?

Usually in traditional yurts at herders' camps on the pastures, with bedding provided and simple home-cooked meals. It's basic and communal, with shared facilities, but a memorable part of the experience.

Is horse trekking safe?

Rides are led by experienced local horsemen who match horses to your ability and keep to a walking pace on tricky ground. As with any riding, there's some inherent risk, so wear sturdy shoes and follow your guide's instructions.
