Not for short introductory rides, where guides lead you at a walk. For multi-day treks to Song-Köl, some basic confidence in the saddle helps, but guides choose calm horses and keep the pace manageable for beginners.

Most Song-Köl horse treks take two to three days, with a night or two in yurts on the plateau. Shorter and longer versions exist depending on your start point and how much time you have.

Usually in traditional yurts at herders' camps on the pastures, with bedding provided and simple home-cooked meals. It's basic and communal, with shared facilities, but a memorable part of the experience.

Rides are led by experienced local horsemen who match horses to your ability and keep to a walking pace on tricky ground. As with any riding, there's some inherent risk, so wear sturdy shoes and follow your guide's instructions.
